Paraprofessional - Teacher Assistant - ST

The Teachers Assistant will provide assistance to classroom teachers in the supervision of students in the classroom, time out, or study hall. Utilizes appropriate behavior management techniques (CPI/BIST) to establish an environment in the classroom conducive to learning and utilizes intervention/de-escalation techniques as appropriate. Responds to crisis situations that occur in the school and residential settings. Completes attendance report. Monitors school hallways and provides 1:1 supervision of students when necessary. Also teaches secondary school subjects to students with emotional/learning difficulties according to the MSDE Voluntary Stated curriculum, to a curriculum developed by the local school system or a curriculum developed by MSDE. Plans curriculum, prepares lessons to meet individualized needs of students, incorporating specific strategies to meet IEP requirements.

  • Completes daily/administrative functions in a time sensitive manner.
    • Accesses Centerwide e-mail at the beginning of each shift to become knowledgeable about and stay in compliance with POA, safety plans, treatment plan addendums, and individual treatment plans.
    • Completes monthly attendance report when substituting as a teacher.
    • Monitors students? daily behavior, including observing and reporting behaviors to school office, treatment teams and education administration.
    • Completes unusual incident reports as necessary.
  • Adheres to Center policy and procedures involving restraints, use of proper CPI, use of quiet rooms, and any other crisis related issue.
    • Responds immediately to any pre-crisis, crisis, and post-crisis situation, and coordinates the delivery of services to effectively de-escalate the crisis, including insuring all crisis plans are implemented appropriately, and any discovered intervention, effective or ineffective, are documented.
    • Utilizes non-violent crisis intervention techniques and provides supervision to other staff involved in the crisis management when de-escalation techniques fail.
  • Participates in treatment teams as assigned.
    • Collaborates and coordinates with registered nurse and/or psychiatrist, as needed, where medication or use of quiet rooms is required.
    • Helps to develop or update POAs.
    • Shares information with team members and during shift change.
  • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students, considering such factors as physical, emotional, and educational levels of development, including strategies to individualize instruction and meet IEP requirements.
    • Follows course objectives and outlines for courses of study following curriculum guidelines according to the MSDE Voluntary Stated curriculum, to a curriculum developed by a local school system, and/or a curriculum developed by the Good Shepherd School.
    • Provides assistance to the students in the classroom on specific subject matter.
    • Assigns lessons, corrects homework, administers tests to evaluate student progress, records results and issues reports to inform school, students, and parents of progress.
    • Maintains appropriate class attendance records.
  • Meeting the following employment standards:
    • Attends all mandatory education programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance.
    • Attends all required department-specific education and training programs and can describe responsibilities related to department safety and specific job-related hazards.
    • Follow exposure control plans/blood borne and air borne pathogens.
    • Attire is professional, neat, clean, and appropriate for the work environment.
    • Wears proper identification while on duty.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all center and student information at all times as observed by peers and management.
    • Reports to work on time and meets acceptable standard for attendance.
    • Attends a minimum of two staff meetings a month. Compliance with center attendance and lateness policy.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor?s degree.
  • Prior experience teaching adolescents strongly preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid and CPI
  • Strong ability to reason.
  • Strong Language and Mathematic skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Time and priority management.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to manage anger/fear/hostility.
  • Ability to manage stress appropriately.
  • Ability to work in close proximity to others or in a distracting environment.
  • Ability to work with others effectively.
  • Successful completion of background screening and hiring process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
